Why dressing like a CEO no matter your job level will prime you for career success
Why dressing like a CEO no matter your job level will prime you for career successWhy dressing like a CEO no matter your job level will prime you for career successThink of dressing up as one of your keys to career success. In fact, studies suggest that employees who want to make an impression might just need a closet makeover. For instance, a 2014 research project found a group of students wearingSuperman T-shirtsrated themselves as physically stronger and more likable.Another study showed that employees of varying income levels and backgrounds who wore suits and blazers weremore productive at work People who wear that kind of clothing feel more powerful, study co-author Michael L. Slepian toldThe Wall Street Journal. What is the best advice for a start up CEO
What is the best advice for a start up CEOWhat is the best advice for a start up CEOMy team negotiates absolutely everything- no exceptions. Our company rule is that you never say yes to the first offer put on the table, and you always have to get at least three to five quotes.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreRealistically, this is all negotiation 101, but many people simply arent used to the practice. For instance, people in production know to negotiate for a better price with manufacturers. Yet some creative departments might leid be as focused on getting a better deal when working with an agency.Thats why every company needs to create rules around negotiation and give people a roadmap for what to do.Negotiating isnt an incredibly difficult skill to learn- it just requires practice. And you should want everyone on your team to get better at it because it can have huge implicatio ns for your business.Heres why you cant skip on negotiating tactics and expect your company to succeedYour team has to bring in more money than the company spends. This seems pretty obvious, I know. But being profitable sets the stage for everything your team does. There are certain aspects of the business that everyone is thinking about, like top-of-the-funnel tactics for spreading brand awareness and bringing in customers. Thats all well and good, but its bedrngnis the only part of your finances that will determine success. You and your team have to keep all expenses in mind- payroll, overhead, vendors- and how much youre actually paying for them. No, these arent the sexy, exciting things to consider, but theyre essential for good business management.Thats why its crucial everyone has their negotiation hat on at all times, thinking about, How much am I spending on this? Does it make sense? Would I spend this if it was coming from my own bank account? Its very easy for spending to spir al out of control if everyone isnt thinking that way.People will agree with your teams requests if they have the courage to ask.Its amazing what you can get just by asking. The herausforderung is, people are often afraid to ask. But the worst thing that can happen is someone will tell you no.If you ask in a nice way and explain why you want what youre asking for, people will work with your company more often than not. The trick is to make sure your request doesnt come off as arbitrary. For example, in the early days ofThirdLove, I was constantly telling vendors or agencies, Were a ten-person startup, we dont have that kind of money. What kind of break can you give us?It was amazing what companies were willing to do for us.Getting over the fear of negotiation requires practice, which is why you have to encourage your team to role play or walk through negotiation with a teammate. After a while, it becomes second nature, and no one thinks twice about asking for an updated offer.Your tea m understands your business better than any vendor.Just because someone hands you a contract doesnt mean they understand your business and whats best for you in the long run.For instance, my team recently negotiated with a photographer over some of the photos from a shoot. Usually, a company only gains access to 20 or so photos. For a traditional retail company, thats plenty. But as a completely online company, we use images in everything we do. Emails, product pages, social, you name it- we need a lot of content.Instead of demanding the images, we told the photographer why we needed the images and then asked if they could work out a different agreement for us. Since we went the distance to explain our reasoning, they agreed.Your team knows your business better than any outside partners, so they should use that to explain and negotiate the best possible terms. You want to set the right kinds of expectations with vendors.Being crystal clear in negotiations and taking time to edit ever y contract is more than just common sense- it shows the vendor your team cares and your company will be a good partner. You want everyone to know what the relationship will be like, and that starts with setting the right expectations. That means being very clear on the outputs, reading the contract thoroughly, and understanding what youre signing. All that attention to detail sets the stage, ensuring the other side knows youre paying attention to whats going on. While it may take some back-and-forth, theres value in making sure both sides are happy before anything is finalized.Negotiating is difficult for everyone at first, but its actually a bit like exercising. Taking the first step is the daunting part. Once you get started, you realize its not that difficult to keep going when you know the work will pay off. This article originally appeared on Inc.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Learn the Ways Leaders Encourage Innovation
Learn the Ways Leaders Encourage Innovation Learn the Ways Leaders Encourage Innovation According to the Center for Creative Leadership, âStudies have shown that 20 to 67 percent of the variance on measures of the climate for creativity in organizations is directly attributable to leadership behavior. What this means is that leaders must act in ways that promote and support organizational innovation.â You often hear managers blame âthe companyâ for not allowing employees to be innovative. While that may be true to some extent, its frustrating that these managers donât seem to understand that in the eyes of their employees, ?they are the company. Regardless of what kind of company you may work in, here are some things a leader can do to create an environment where employees are encouraged to be innovative:?? Donât Pop the Balloon - Put a Little More Air in the Balloon What this means is, when an employee comes to you with an idea, resist the urge to come up with all kind of reasons why the idea wonât work. Thatâs throwing darts at the idea. Instead, come up with ways to help the employee identify barriers and solutions, encourage the employee to test the idea, or look for things about the idea that will work. In other words, put air in the balloon. Allow Your Employees Time to Innovate Some call this âGoogle timeâ â" giving employees a few hours a week to experiment, work on projects that are outside of their jobs, to read, or to solve problems. Encourage Employee to Hang out With âPNLUsâ (People Not Like You) People that are different bring a different perspective and fresh ideas. Some teams invite PNLUs to be a part of their project teams. I once heard someone say he purposely requests the middle seat on airplanes because it doubles the change that he will meet someone interesting. Practice and Encourage âPossibility Thinkingâ Instead of saying, âIt wonât work,â or, âWe already tried that,â say Well, up until now it hasnât worked,â or, âWhat ifâ¦?â Set a Realistic Expectation for Innovation Success Innovative ideas, by their very nature, probably wonât be readily accepted or they will fail. Whatâs a good batting average for innovation? Some would say around 200, or one out of five ideas. Donât let your employees get frustrated about the four rejections â" instead, reward the effort and encourage them to come back swinging until they get a hit. Accept Failure as Learning Yes, itâs become a cliché that has been mocked in the Dilbert comic strip, but if you donât fall now and then, youâre not really trying. When an employee fails, ask them to reflect on what they learned, and encourage them to apply those learnings in the future. Provide as Much Autonomy and Ownership for Jobs, Projects, or Tasks According to Daniel Pink, employees are motivated the most by autonomy â" the freedom to do things their own way. The challenge for many managers to allow employees to do things differently than they would do them, as long as they are getting good results. Who knows, they may come up with a better way! Provide Training Innovation is not something a person is born with (DNA) â" innovation can be learned. Provide training in associating, questioning, observing, networking, and experimenting. Ask Questions That Encourage Innovation See â70 Awesome Coaching Questions Using the GROW Model.â Allow Your Employees to Attend Conferences and Networking Events Again, in order to get them exposed to PNLUs and new ideas. Encourage Employees to Observe Their Customers or Users This is central to the concept of âdesign thinking,â pioneered by the innovative design company IDEO. This isnât about reading market research reports or user surveys â" itâs about actually going out and observing the users of whatever it is you make or provide.

Training and Education Requirements for Lawyers
Training and Education Requirements for Lawyers Training and Education Requirements for Lawyers Lawyers must undergo extensive educational training and testing before theyre licensed to practice. The exact requirements can vary somewhat by state, but educational requirements for lawyers always include certain degrees and exams. Youll need a four-year undergraduate degree followed by three years of law school and a juris doctorate (J.D.) degree. A J.D. is awarded by law schools that are accredited by the American Bar Association. You must then pass the bar examination. Each state has its own bar association, so you must pass in the state in which you want to practice. You must then additionally pass an ethics examination in many states. Bachelorâs Degree A four-year degree from an accredited college or university is a prerequisite to acceptance at an ABA-accredited law school. The ABA doesnt recommend any one area of study, nor do law schools show any particular preference for one major over others. Students are not required to major in pre-law. Law schools accept such a diverse pool of applicants with many different majors and backgrounds that you can fine-tune your major to your ultimate career goals. For example, you might want to major in business if you hope to eventually pursue business law, or in sociology, if you want to work in the public sector. A major in accounting might be practical and helpful if you want to work in tax law. The Law School Admissions Test Earning a bachelors degree doesnt ensure that youll be accepted to a law school. You must also take and pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) before you can apply to law schools. Admissions officers put a great deal of weight on LSAT scores; ABA-accredited law schools wont accept applicants who havent taken the test. The LSAT is a half-day standardized examination that tests the analytical and reading comprehension skills considered necessary to succeed in law school. It includes five multiple-choice sections as well as an unscored writing test. Your LSAT score can also factor in determining financial aid. Its recommended that you take the test by October of the preceding year if youre hoping for fall semester admission. Law School Lawyers must graduate from a law school approved by the American Bar Association and have their J.D. to qualify for the bar examination in most states. ABA accreditation signifies that the law school has satisfied and sustained certain standards established to ensure a quality legal education. Not all law schools are ABA-approved, and attending a non-ABA approved school can significantly hinder your employment prospects. Law school typically involves general courses as well as core subject coursework, including constitutional law, international law, business law, criminal law, courtroom procedures, and civil procedures. Theres no single standard curriculum; they can vary somewhat from school to school. You can usually begin taking specialized courses midway through your second year, and you can also begin applying for externships at this time. Internships and Externships Working as an attorney requires more than just a solid educational background. A certain skill set can help immeasurably as well. Attorneys can hone these skills through opportunities such as internships. Many law students apply for these positions as undergraduates. They involve working for a law firm or organization for a prescribed period of time, often during the summer months. Its hands-on experience performing various jobs under the supervision of an attorney. Competition for these positions is typically fierce, so you might want to consider an externship as well. The process is similar, but externs typically work for nonprofits and government entities. In either case, its an opportunity to polish skills that arent typically taught in law school. For example, a successful lawyer will be keenly argumentative- in a good way. A knack for critical thinking is important, as is the ability to negotiate and persuade. Superior writing skills are as important as speaking skills. Time management is crucial. Theyre all things that can be learned working side by side with an experienced lawyer for a period of time. The Bar Examination Law school graduates who want to be admitted to their states bar must pass a two-day examination that tests general legal principles and substantive knowledge of the law. The exact format can vary by state, but one day of the examination usually consists of the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE)- six 30-minute essay questions- and the second day involves a series of questions designed to test knowledge of that particular states law. The exam might also include other tests intended to measure understanding of professional conduct. Most states also require lawyers to take an ethics examination, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE), as well. Its a two-hour, multiple choice test, and only two states and Puerto Rico waive this requirement as of 2018: Wisconsin and Maryland. Students can take this examination during law school in some states, usually after completing an ethics course. Admittance to the state bar might not depend solely on how well you perform on the bar exam. Bar examiners in some states also consider the applicants character. Most states require that lawyers take continuing education courses throughout their careers to keep current and to maintain their licenses to practice. Salary and Job Growth Trends The median pay for attorneys as of mid-2017 was $119,250 annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This number falls right in the middle of the salary range. There were more than 1.3 million practicing attorneys in the U.S. in 2016, yet job growth between 2016 and 2026 is estimated to be about 8 percent. Approximately 65,000 more jobs are expected to open up by 2026. But there are still more students graduating from law school each year than there are jobs available for them. This makes achieving excellent LSAT and bar exam scores even more critical so you stand out from the rest of the pack. Other Options The J.D. is the most common law degree, but you might also want to pursue a master of law degree or doctor of judicial science degree depending on your aspirations. The doctor of judicial science degree is the highest and most prestigious law degree available and recognized in the U.S. Its a second degree that can only be acquired after successful completion of the J.D. or a master of law degree. It, too, is a three-year degree. Most law professors have the distinction of having earned doctorates of judicial science. A master of law degree also requires first completing the J.D. Its a one-year degree that allows you to focus on and specialize in a certain field of law.

After My Interview, They Re-Posted The Ad
After My Interview, They Re-Posted The Ad After My Interview, They Re-Posted The Ad Wouldnât it be nice to not be left hanging? What happened to common courtesy, especially when youâre doing all you can to make new connections, meet people, and leave a strong impression in your interviews? The radio silence can be deafening, not only when you apply online, but even more so when you interview in person. Then a sledgehammer hits you over the head: you see the ad for the job you interviewed for just got re-posted. What does that mean for you? While it can be easy to just let it go, Iâm going to tell you why you need to re-contact the person who interviewed you. I Have A Philosophy About This Send 1 more email; make ore phone call; and reach out 1 more time. Why? Nothing negative is going to occur. There literally is no negative. The interviewer is not going to jump through the phone to strangle you. There is nothing to be afraid of. The reality is, there are only 2 outcomes: neutral â" you donât reach a person, donât get a response, or the response is, âno,â any of which mean youâre no worse off than you were in the 1st place. The other possible outcome is positive â" you rekindle things and re-open the lines of communication. Hereâs how you do this well: when you reach back out, put a HUGE smile on your face! People can see your smile through the phone and through email. Then, treat this like a normal follow-up communication. In other words, mention nothing about the re-posted ad; in fact, remove the new ad from your sphere of knowledge. Hereâs What To Say âI really enjoyed our discussion the other day, and Iâm excited because my skills in A, B, and C, really seem to be a strong match with what your business is doing right now. May I find out the status of my interview and next steps please?â Thatâs how you handle the situation. Thatâs how you stop being apprehensive about what might happen. And thatâs how you just take some control over this thing. An ancillary benefit may occur as well: you could find out, for example, they liked you, but not for this role at this moment. They may genuinely invite you to keep in touch. Make sure to do so. In fact, consider these folks to be valuable members of your professional network. Follow the relevant people on LinkedIn, and reach out by phone or email after 30 days, again at the 60-day mark, and again at 90 days. Remember The Bigger Picture Landing an interview is good; but 1 interview at a time is a long & winding road. Job search like a BOSS â" work multiple opportunities, as most successful candidates do. Mentally move on from those decision makers who are slow to provide you with feedback, status, and answers. You need to devote that mental energy to other potential jobs, decision makers, and relationships! There's an online master class for you find out more on how to keep multiple opportunities going for yourself. In â5 Game-Changing Job Search Hacks for the 50+ Job Hunter,â one of the key tips youâll learn is how to immediately talk to virtually ANY recruiter or decision maker! Make these connections at the same time as applying for the roles you want, and keep those relationships going throughout the course of the interview process, to increase the likelihood that you are the candidate who gets the offer.

After the Interview Checklist - What to Do Next
After the Interview Checklist - What to Do Next After the Interview Checklist - What to Do Next We always get excited every time we find out that someone weâve helped left an interview feeling good about their chances of landing a job. The next question after they tell us the good news is, âWhat do I do next?â This is a very important question. Theyâre really pumped up about the opportunity but they need to be careful. They need to reign in all that excitement so they donât bring the momentum to a halt â" sending an ill-timed thank you note or going completely silent will do just that. With that in mind, weâve put together a checklist that you can refer to whenever you crush that interview and want to be smart about what comes next: Eat a quick snack Okay, this might sound totally unrelated but you need to refuel after a long day of interviews. Take a break and reward yourself with a quick snack or your favorite dessert! Write it down We know what youâre thinking, here come the thank you notes! But thereâs a few things to ponder first. Hereâs the thing, a simple âThank you for meeting with meâ message isnât going to make you stand out in a hiring managerâs mind. Before you start drafting a thank you note, write down a few precise details that were discussed with each interviewer. This will help refresh your memory and allow you to tailor a specific and thoughtful thank you message. Find the excitement Now come the thank you notes, right? Not yet. Remember to remind yourself why you got excited about the job you just interviewed for. Will it allow you to make a major career change? Is it the perfect company that youâve always dreamed of working for? Find the reason that made you excited about the interview and use that as a guide to communicate that enthusiasm to the hiring manager. Be sure youâre not coming off as too overexcited; just let them know the gist of your enthusiasm. Write a thank you note Okay, now itâs time to write thank you notes and send them out. If youâre feeling overwhelmed and think this is going to take a long time, donât feel this way. In all reality, it only takes about ten minutes. Follow up You can do one of two things here: Wait for the hiring manager to get back to you and completely stress out while you wait â" or â" you can be smart and take a more proactive approach by following up in a timely manner. If a timeline is given, be sure to respect that timeline. If the timeline approaches and you still havenât heard back, give them a 1-2 day buffer to still reach out to you. Plenty of hurdles come up, including administrative hold-ups or unexpected absences. If no timeline or sense of next steps is given upon exiting the interview, allow at least 4-5 business days (a week) before following up, as itâs likely that they are interviewing additional candidates and havenât yet made a decision. Over-eagerness bordering on impatience will not do anything positive for your chances. Once youâve checked everything off this list, get back to your job search because as exciting as this opportunity was, it might not materialize, so you need to keep plugging away until this offer â" or another one â" comes along.

There are so many books, websites, and apps to check out that you may feel inundated by the abundance of information and unsure where to start. This is before you even start to consider the unsolicited wedding advice from family and friends! How do you sift through the sea of wedding resources to find the best stress-free wedding planning secrets? To help you get started along your wedding planning journey, just follow the list of tips below. This simp le 6 step process will ensure you get from engagement to the altar in a clear and organized manner while also sticking to your budget!Getting StartedFirst thingâs first, youâll want to get yourself organized. This is likely the first time youâve planned such a big event, so having a handy wedding planning guide book is key to tackling everything on the to-do list. Make sure to pick up a good wedding planner book to keep yourself on track. The best wedding planners and organizers typically include things like a wedding planning timeline and checklist, an outline of tasks to be completed or questions to ask vendors. This is especially important because they often incorporate a task list that you need to tackle month-by-month throughout your engagement. Knowing what you need to do and when is half the battle when it comes to making a plan!Try to find a book that has room enough for you to make notes, fill in worksheets, or record your findings. If you canât find anything at th e bookstore you love, consider making your own. You can easily create your own DIY wedding planning binder using a 3-ring binder that you can add to throughout the process. There are lots of great printable wedding planning templates online that you can download and use for free! The important thing is to find a system that works for you! Your wedding organizer should be a place where you can keep all the various information associated with your wedding plans for easy and convenient access.Defining Your Wedding VisionAfter youâve gotten started with your wedding organizational system, itâs time to figure out what type of wedding you want. Sit down with your partner and discuss the who, what, where, when, why, and how of weddings. Who: Discuss a potential guest list and try to come up with a rough figure of the number of people youâd like to attend. What: Discuss what type of wedding you want to have. Formal or casual? Rustic or modern? Where: Discuss the location of your ideal wedding. Would it be in the town where you currently live or a destination wedding? Or maybe youâd like to be married at a specific place that has special meaning to you? Would you prefer an indoor or outdoor event? When: Consider what might be the ideal time of year for you to get married. Do you have a favorite season? Is there a special date on which youâd like to plan to tie the knot? Why: Ask each other why throwing a wedding is important to you. Why are you going through the effort of planning an event to celebrate your marriage? How: Chat about how you want to feel on your wedding day. Excited and energetic with a large raucous dance party? Or sentimental and romantic with a calm and intimate dinner party? And then the final how: How are we going to pay for this thing?!Calculate a Realistic Wedding BudgetSetting a wedding budget before you begin officially planning is key if you want to have a wedding you can actually afford. Though major media reports might share supposed average wedding costs throughout the country, donât let those numbers sway you.Itâs important to calculate an appropriate wedding budget based on your personal financial situation. Focus on figuring out the amount that feels most comfortable, practical and achievable for you and your partner, so you can plan a wedding that is authentic to who you are and what you value as a couple.Consider all the different people who may be contributing, as well as what you can save to add to the wedding fund over the course of your engagement. Add in any personal savings youâre willing to donate to the cause. This should give you a good foundation for your total wedding budget as you begin to get quotes and make plans for th e big day. If anything, you may want to determine a maximum figure that youâre absolutely not willing to go over under any circumstances. If for some reason your final figure doesnât measure up to the type of wedding you want to have, then you may need to consider a longer engagement in order to save up. Itâs all about determining what matters most to you and your partner, which leads to the next point.Decide on Your Wedding PrioritiesOnce youâve got a rough budget set, a great way to plan for how to allocate those funds is to outline your top priorities for the event. Consider what matters most to you and your partner, and distribute your budget accordingly.Basically, itâs likely that youâll spend more of your budget on the areas that matter most to you, and less on the areas you find of less importance. Itâs important to consider guest experience when outlining your priorities as well. While you may want your dream designer wedding dress, itâs a better idea to put t hose funds towards something that impacts your guests, such as a comfortable and enjoyable venue. If you and your partner are foodies but donât care for cake, you may opt to splurge on catering from one of your favorite restaurants and serve inexpensive doughnuts from Krispy Kreme in lieu of a tiered wedding cake. Or if youâre the party-all-night types, you may choose to spend a large portion of your budget on the wedding entertainment and less on the floral decor. Each coupleâs priorities are unique, so be sure to discuss with your partner. An easy way to do this is to each decide your top 3 priorities and then compare them. Budgeting for your wedding is a great first exercise in marital compromise! See where you overlap, and be willing to negotiate on dividing the budget to satisfy both sides.Book the Big Things FirstTypically, youâll end up booking high-priority items first, such as your wedding venue and the photographer. Other common early bookings include entertainment a nd catering. Each of these items contributes to the experience of the day, so they should be higher up on the to-do list.Itâs also true that good quality vendors tend to book up well in advance. Should You Add a Photo to Your Resume
Should You Add a Photo to Your Resume Should You Add a Photo to Your Resume Its a great question! If youve wondered the same thing, youre not alone. Many resume templates with embedded photos are beginning to pop up on the internet. In all honesty, these templates are often beautifully designed. They look like works of art. At first glance, theyre very enticing, and they can make you question what you thought were the rules of the road with resumes. Have things changed since the last time you looked? Despite all this, I would not recommend putting a photo on your resume. Companies arent supposed to factor certain information, such as age, race, and gender, into hiring decisions. Providing a photo gives the company the option to make judgments about you that are unrelated to your work experience. Remember, it takes years to build up your experience, but it only takes a few seconds to make a first impression, even on your resume. A hiring manager looks at your resume for just a few moments before deciding whether or not to read further. Its best to use this precious time to showcase information such as your college degree and work experience rather than your current hairstyle and outfit. In addition to taking the hiring managers eyes off of your expertise, a photo also risks leaving a negative first impression. There are certain unspoken rules when it comes to business. For example, you should always wear closed-toed shoes with a suit, and you should always be on time to an interview. The hiring manager probably wont bring up the picture in the top corner of your resume, but they will wonder how up-to-date your business skills really are. Theyll wonder why you included a photo when its so far outside of the norm. The same rule applies to your business cards. One of the only fields where its completely normal to have a photo on your business card is realty. It makes sense. Realtors are salespeople, and buying a home is a very personal process. You want to feel like you know your salesperson well. In any other industry, however, a photo on the business card typically looks amateurish. It can make your otherwise professional-looking cards look homemade or too sales-y. If you have a great photo you want to show off, the perfect place for it is LinkedIn. Your LinkedIn profile is incomplete if it doesnt have a photo. Be sure the photo is just you. Wear business or business-casual clothing. Take the photo of your face, with good light, and smile at the camera. If standards for resumes change, we will revisit this topic. But for now, dont get drawn into pretty templates with bright photos. Adding a photo to your resume will only make you look out of touch.
